Who Taught the Midwife? Exploring the State of the Midwifery Higher Education Workforce
Presentation

In September 2023, the RCM released a report on the State of Midwifery Education. The statistics and detail therein painted a concerning picture of an education workforce that was younger, less experienced, less academically qualified and less diverse over time. Educators were also seen to be operating in an environment where they had more students to care for and educate than ever before. Out of this came a series of BJM articles exploring the reasons for these circumstances, reflecting on the literature relating to the themes described in the report, the impact on students and practice, and the experiences of the authors as leaders within a School of Nursing & Midwifery. Out of this work arose a series of recommendations for both educators and practice staff, that consider the importance of midwifery education (and the wellbeing of those doing the educating) in assuring the competence and wellbeing of the future workforce and these are shared within this session.
